At this year’s edition of Decanter, contestants sent in a record number of wine samples – 18,244 wines from 54 countries. For two weeks, 250 internationally acclaimed experts, including 41 Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers, recognized as Best of Show some 50 wines and gave out 165 platinum, 676 gold, 5,900 silver and in excess of 8,000 bronze medals. Overall, Bulgarian wineries won 53 medals only one of which was gold. The results from the competition confirmed the exceptional level of performance of South American wine makers. Argentina, for example, tripled its haul, taking home 41 prizes as opposed to 14 a year ago. What is more, four of its wines got Best-of-Show distinction. Interestingly, Argentina also performs very well in the price-to-quality arena as three of its highest rated wines come at prices of under BGP 15. Chilean wine makers won 21 gold medals, six platinum and two Best-of-Show distinctions. In this category, French wines still dominate with a total of 10 out of 50 such distinctions.
